Kathleen Shelley, LCSW

I have practiced for four years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and 14 years as an LSW.  I am also a
school social worker working with special needs children and their families. Aging and the loss of
independence, and caregiver stress are areas in which I am very familiar as well.  One of the most critical
aspects of the therapeutic process is to develop a trusting therapeutic relationship with clients which
involves positive regard, active listening, and respecting the client’s right to self-determination. My
approach to promoting change is to focus on a client’s strengths, goals, and empowerment.  I have
found employing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy strategies with all age groups helpful in the therapeutic
process. In addition to identifying the feelings and thoughts of the client, external factors which may be
impacting, such as family, friends, medical conditions, and healthcare providers, etc. are considered.  My
focus areas include anxiety, depression, trauma, adjustment disorders, the aging process and stressors,
and family conflict.
